As a young boy Jimmy Mallon of County Armagh, Northern Ireland was in Daisy Hill hospital with a red line drawn across his left leg where the bone saw was to amputate the limb along with the cancerous tumor within, but his mother stopped the procedure. He would travel to the Queen Victoria Hospital in Belfast to endure the new science of cobalt radiation but that had no effect on the tumor. After a family friend was able to rally the town and raise enough money 9-year-old Jimmy traveled alone with a group of 80 Irish pilgrims to Lourdes, France and bathed in the healing waters in search of a miracle from the Virgin Mary. He returned home discovering no change in his condition but there was also no change in his mother’s determination. Chicago actor Jonathan “Rocky” Hagloch will recall this extraordinary tale as he portrays Jim Mallon in the one-man production of, A Bump on the Leg by Leigh Johnson. Witness the wonder of a mother’s love that may well have you asking the question… Do I believe in Miracles?
Jonathan "Rocky" Hagloch (above) performs as Jim Mallon in the one-man version of A Bump On The Leg - first presented at the Irish American Heritage Center on January 9, 2026. Jim Mallon (below) answered questions from the audience following the performance.
